The University of Mons, abbreviated as "UMONS", is a French-speaking university located in Belgium, in the province of Hainaut, near the Franco-Belgian border. It is distant from Brussels, the capital of Europe, barely about fifty kilometers. UMONS was born in 2009 from the merger between the University of Mons-Hainaut and the Faculty of Engineering (formely Mining School) of Mons, its oldest faculty created in 1837. SCK•CEN is one of the largest research centers in Belgium. More than 700 employees devote themselves daily to the development of peaceful radioactivity applications.
