The University of Mons, abbreviated as "UMONS", is a French-speaking university located in Belgium, in the province of Hainaut, near the Franco-Belgian border. It is distant from Brussels, the capital of Europe, barely about fifty kilometers. UMONS was born in 2009 from the merger between the University of Mons-Hainaut and the Faculty of Engineering (formely Mining School) of Mons, its oldest faculty created in 1837. SCK•CEN is one of the largest research centers in Belgium. More than 700 employees devote themselves daily to the development of peaceful radioactivity applications. Our developments are the fruit of a long list of applications oriented towards the future, applications intended for the medical, industrial world and the energy sector. Our expertise is of international notoriety. Three research themes characterize our activities: (1) The safety of nuclear installations, (2) sustainable management of radioactive waste, and (3) the protection of the population and the environment against ionizing influence. SCK•CEN works in close collaboration with many partners both national and international.
